Techniques to try when you’re driving

Switch it off – modern cars use virtually no extra fuel when they’re re-started without pressing the accelerator so don’t let your engine idle. If it is safe to do so, turn off your engine when stationary for more than a minute or two. Remember though, your brakes and other systems will not work when the engine is off so do not attempt to let your car roll.

Check your revs. Change up a gear between 2000rpm and 2500rpm. Shift up earlier to reduce engine friction and increase efficiency.

Drive smoothly - anticipate as far ahead as possible to avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration. Decelerate early when slowing down.

Step off the accelerator - when slowing down or driving downhill, remain in gear but take your foot off the accelerator as early as possible. In modern cars this reduces fuel flow to the engine to virtually zero.

Slow down - avoid excessive speeds when possible. Driving at 85mph is against the law and uses approximately 25% more fuel than 70mph. Planning your journey well to avoid delays will help to reduce the need for speeding.

Get your car in shape

Check tyre pressure frequently – at least once a month and before long journeys. Under-inflated tyres are not only dangerous and but also increase your fuel consumption.

Air conditioning - switching it off or using climate control on the ‘eco’ setting reduces fuel consumption. However, opening a window at high speed increases fuel consumption more than using air conditioning.

Don’t warm the engine – modern engines don’t need to be “warmed up” so idling before you start a journey simply wastes precious fuel.
